Observation Of The Perseus Cluster Of Galaxies With The MAGIC Gamma-Ray Telescope

چکیده
The Perseus galaxy cluster was observed by the MAGIC Cherenkov telescope for a total effective time of 24.4 hours during November and December 2008. No significant γ-ray excess was detected. The resulting upper limits on the γ-ray emission above 100 GeV are 4.63 and 6.55 × 10−12cm−2 s−1 for spectral indices of −1.5 and −2.2, respectively. The obtained limits constrain the emission produced by cosmic rays and dark matter annihilation. The results are compatible with cosmological cluster simulations for the cosmic ray induced γ-ray emission, constraining the relative cosmic ray pressure to < 3.5% for the cluster core region (< 7% when considering biasing effects of galaxy-sized substructures). Using simplified assumptions adopted in earlier work (constant cosmic ray-to-thermal pressure throughout the entire cluster and a power-law spectrum with an index of −2.1), we constrain the ratio of cosmic ray-to-thermal energy to ECR/Eth < 1.7%. The upper limit also translates to a level of γ-ray emission from possible annihilations of the cluster dark matter (the dominant mass component) that is consistent with boost factors of ∼ 10 for the typically expected dark matter annihilation induced emission. Our estimations indicate that the Perseus galaxy cluster is the most promising cluster where to look for cosmic ray induced γ-ray emission.

Galaxy clusters might be sources of TeV gamma rays emitted by high-energy protons and electrons accelerated by large scale structure formation shocks, galactic winds, or active galactic nuclei. Furthermore, gamma rays may be produced in dark matter particle annihilation processes at the cluster cores. We report on observations of the galaxy clusters Perseus and Abell 2029 using the 10 m Whipple...

متن کاملTeV γ - Ray Observations of the Perseus Galaxy Cluster
We report on observations of the Perseus cluster of galaxies using the 10 m Whipple γ-ray telescope during the 2004-2005 observing season. We apply a two dimensional analysis technique to allow us to scrutinize the cluster for TeV emission. In this contribution we will first calculate flux upper limits on TeV γ-ray sources within the cluster. Second, we derive an upper limit on the extended clu...
متن کاملThe MAGIC telescope for gamma-ray astronomy above 30 GeV
The MAGIC telescope is presently at its commissioning phase at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory (ORM) on the island of La Palma. MAGIC will become the largest ground-based gamma ray telescope in the world, being sensitive to photons of energies as low as 30 GeV. The spectral range between 10 and 300 GeV remains to date mostly unexplored. Observations in this region of the spectrum are exp...

— The MAGIC Telescope, now taking data with an energy threshold well below 100 GeV, will soon be able to take full advantage of the fast slewing capability of its altazimuthal mount. Exploiting the link with the GCN network, the MAGIC Telescope could be one of the first ground-based experiments able to see the prompt emission of Gamma Ray Bursts in the few tens of GeV region.
